Happy 90th birthday
to Austen Moore





MIKE'S SPONSORED WEIGHTLOSS

21st January to 25th March 2017

We recently acquired the new Leon Paul wireless foil/epee box.
After extensive testing it has proved a great success, but costs £800.
To raise money to buy another, and for his own health and wellbeing,
Mike is taking part in a sponsored weightloss between the above dates.
His target loss is one stone, or 6.5 kg for younger members.

On Saturday 21st January Mike's weight was 15 st 11 lb, or 100 kg.

BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL FENCING TOURNAMENT 2016

A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped over the Easter weekend.
Both the set-up and break-down were completed in record times.
The whole tournament ran smoothly thanks to you.

ELISABETH POWELL - feb 2015

Elisabeth has been selected to represent the country in both a
forthcoming European Junior Epee event and the World Championships at Easter.
Well done Liz.



RIP - FRED SHEPPARD

Fred Sheppard, who was a long time member of BFC,
suffered a severe stroke in September of last year.
He was taken into hospital just before Christmas
with various complications and died on 4th January.
The funeral is at 11.30 am on Monday 19th January at
Lodge Hill Cemetary, Weoley Park Road, Birmingham, B29 5AA.
Our thoughts are with his family.

SAINSBURY'S ACTIVE KIDS 2014

A massive Thank You to all members and families.
You did it, this year you collected even more vouchers than last year at 2175.

We have exchanged these for the following
sporting equipment for the club.

9 x Stop Watches

Thank You All for helping us obtain these very useful items of equipment.





ADDITIONAL JUNIOR TRAINING SESSION - TUESDAY EVENINGS

Tuesdays 7.00pm to 8.30pm. - Cost £6.00

From 28th January 2014 we are inviting more advanced and competing
junior members to an training session on Tuesday evenings, 7.00pm to 8.30pm.
This junior session will run alongside the adult session.
Training will be with the adults but juniors will be teamed together for safety.

Tuition will be from 7.00pm to 8.00pm, after this is free fencing,
so younger juniors can leave when suitable for a school night.
If interested speak to Mike or Roger for more details.

took place on Thursday, 20th September.

MIKE and JOAN WHITEHOUSE in 'THE SWORD'

This quarter's issue of 'The Sword' magazine included a very nice article
by Joan highlighting the friendly and truly international nature of
the Birmingham International Fencing Tournament.
This Easter weekend tournament has taken place for more than 75 years.
BFC members play an important role in the running of the event.



BFC MONTHLY INTERNAL TOURNAMENT

Alessandra Villa has suggested and volunteered
to organise a monthly internal club tournament.
Her initial thoughts are for the 3rd Thursday each month,
starting September 20th 2012.
Schedule and monthly results will be posted on this site
and prizes will be awarded at the end of the year.
Exact details will follow at a later date but this is a great idea,
let's all give Alessandra full support in making it work.

Coaching Qualifications

Mike Whitehouse, BFC director of coaching, is an England Fencing Coach Educator and also lead tutor for both the BFA and England Fencing. He is overseeing the continuing development of BFC's team of qualified coaches.

Clubmark Certification

Thanks to a lot of work by Roger Simmonds, the club has been accredited with Clubmark! This evidences our commitment to quality teaching and training for all.
